Scholarship Winner

Malcolm Byron is the recipient of the 2017 Steve Estes Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Rotary Club of Fuquay-Varina.  Malcolm is graduating with honors from Fuquay-Varina High School in June and will be attending NC State in the fall to pursue a degree in meteorology. His career goal is to become an on-air meteorologist.  The $2,000 scholarship award will go a long way toward easing the financial burden on Malcolm’s family of attending NC State. His family has had to deal with many financial and medical obstacles over the years and really appreciates the assistance the scholarship provides.

The Rotary Club’s motto is “Service Above Self”, and it is exemplified by Malcolm. He is an active member of several service clubs and organizations at Fuquay-Varina High School. Malcolm has been involved in numerous service projects through his involvement with Key Club, National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). His AP Statistics Semester Project was an analysis of student behavior regarding the proper use of the crosswalk on Broad Street in front of the school. His study will be the basis of a public service announcement on WRAL. He has also used his extensive knowledge of databases and computer systems to improve and enhance the computerized student check in system for the FVHS library.

The Rotary Club of Fuquay-Varina has been involved with the FVHS chapter of FBLA in recent years. Since Rotary is a Business oriented service organization, it made sense for the club and local high school chapter to work together. Malcolm is a four year member and has served in numerous leadership roles with the club, serving as Chapter President this year. He has also been to four national business skills competitions, winning top ten awards in three of them.  Malcolm graduates this June as the most decorated member in the history of the FVHS FBLA Chapter.
